Violin/CelloSome people have asked me how I came to play both violin and cello. I spent a large part of my life, over 30 years, playing violin, and it did not occur to me to try something else until around 1990. At that time I heard a cellist whose playing moved me so much that I felt I had to try it. As it turned out, the cello suited me very well, and seemed to be much more my own voice than violin. I was planning to do it just for the summer, but ended up enjoying it so much that I kept on. At first it was difficult to play both instruments, so I had to drop violin for a while in order to learn the basics of cello. After a while I could do both without confusing myself too much, and now I am quite at ease switching back and forth.
I find that cello and violin are different in subtle ways that I never would have thought
of without extensive study of both. Although they are structurally similar, there are
significant differences in the way they are handled. It would be a mistake to assume that
teaching one string instrument automatically qualifies one to teach them all; cello is not
a big violin.
